Gili Eco Trust: Protecting the Environment and Empowering Communities

I have spent a lot of time on Gili Trawangan over the years. It is a really special place and while I usually Freediving at Freedive Gili or drink a Bintang (Indonesian beer) I always try to help out at Gili Eco Trust.

The Gili Eco Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the fragile ecosystems of the Gili Islands in Indonesia and promoting sustainable development in the region. It was established in 2000 by a group of concerned local businesses and individuals, the trust has grown to become a vital force for change. They implement a wide range of projects and initiatives aimed at preserving the islands' natural resources and empowering local communities. Sian Willians is the fearless leader.

What They Do

The Gili Eco Trust focuses on several key areas to achieve its mission of environmental protection and sustainable development. These include:

  1. Coral Reef Restoration: The Gili Islands are home to some of the world's most diverse and vibrant coral reefs. However, these delicate ecosystems are under threat from factors such as climate change, overfishing, and tourism. The trust works to restore damaged coral reefs through the innovative Biorock technology, which uses low-voltage electrical currents to stimulate coral growth and recovery.

  2. Waste Management and Recycling: With the rapid growth of tourism in the Gili Islands, waste management has become a significant challenge. The Gili Eco Trust has implemented various waste management and recycling initiatives, including the "Bank Sampah" (Waste Bank) program, which encourages locals to separate and recycle waste in exchange for financial incentives.

  3. Education and Outreach: The trust recognizes the importance of engaging local communities in its efforts to protect the environment. Through educational workshops, school programs, and community events, the Gili Eco Trust raises awareness about environmental issues and empowers locals to take action in preserving their natural surroundings.

  4. Sustainable Development: The Gili Eco Trust works closely with local businesses and government agencies to promote sustainable development practices, such as responsible tourism, eco-friendly construction, and renewable energy solutions.

How They Help

The Gili Eco Trust's initiatives have had a significant positive impact on the island's ecosystems and communities. Coral reef restoration projects have led to healthier, more resilient reefs that support a diverse range of marine life. Waste management and recycling programs have reduced the amount of waste entering the environment, helping to keep the islands clean and beautiful for both residents and visitors.

The trust's education and outreach efforts have fostered a greater sense of environmental responsibility among locals, ensuring that future generations will continue to care for the island's precious natural resources. By promoting sustainable development, the Gili Eco Trust helps to create a future in which the Gili Islands can thrive both environmentally and economically.

What You Can Do to Help
